In 1995, a concern arises upon the fact that there are many students in the Faculty of Economics, University of Indonesia, who have difficulties in continuing their study due to financial problem. These provoke the founders of Karya Salemba Empat Foundation to collect donation then distribute it to 3 students. The fund collection and disbursement activities were called “Program 84 Scholarship”.
In second period of academic year 1996/1997, the number of grantees increased to 10 students, while the number of donors also increased from 8 people to 13 people. In the same period, Program 84 Scholarship also gave book donation to the University of Indonesia Library.
In the third period (1997-1998), the scholarship program developed further by providing support to 12 students from various faculties with an increasing number of donors as much as 20 people. The number of books donated to the library also increase in line with the number of donations received.
During the fourth period (1998-1999), along with the increasing number of donors (26 people) and with the growing number of scholarship grantees to 19 students, while the regular scholarship program started the additional scholarship program for final assignment and thesis, Program 84 Scholarship began to enter a new phase.
Eight founders of the scholarship program agreed to establish a foundation in which the main goal is to act as a representative of accountability / transparency upon the scholarship program implementations. On October 3, 1998, the program was officially incorporated under the name of Karya Salemba Empat Foundation. Started from disbursement of scholarship to 3 students of Faculty of Economics, University of Indonesia, KSE currently has grown by providing scholarships to more than 6,500 students. Meanwhile, for ongoing academic year 2012-2013, the number of grantees who receive scholarship support amounted to 1,582 students from various departments in 13 State Universities. The number of donations disbursed during 2012 reached more than Rp. 36 billion. Many of the grantees have succeeded in reaching their dreams through various of profession and activities.
