History

Karya Salemba Empat (KS4) was founded on 3 October 1998 through akte notaris H Asmawel Amin SH, Jakarta. The foundation was founded to provide financial support to Indonesian educational institutions in the form of scholarships for students and other learning and educational support. KS4 is the culmination of individual activities of University of Indonesia (UI) alumni since 1995. KS4 founders are Alumni Faculty of Economics University Indonesia (FEUI), who have actively coordinated, gathered and distributed scholarships to students within UI.

In 1998, several former students of the University of Indonesia founded Karya Salemba Empat (KS4). With Indonesia deep in economic and political crisis, the idea was simple: to give much needed economic support to poor students during a dificult period when the per capita income of Indonesians almost halved.

KS4 is actually a successor to Beasiswa Program 84 (84 Scholarship Program), an informal program which had been coordinating individual donations to UI students since 1995. The first award period was between November 1995 to October 1996, with three students as recipients. In the second year of 1996/1997 the number of students supported grew to 10, with 13 donors. In the same year the program also donated books to university library.

During the third period of 1997/1998 scholarship activities further grew as 12 students were supported by 20 donors. The number of books donated to the library also grew with the increasing size of donations received.

During the fourth period of 1998/1999 the number of students supported grew to 19 and donors numbered 26, and KS4 was formally born. KS4 then ecpanded further by providing scholarships for research and thesis, starting from 1999.

As the foundation enters its 11th year, Indonesia's economic challenges are still with us and students from less privileged backgrounds continue to struggle. KS4 needs to maintain it's mission and expand. To date, more than 600 students have recieved a total of Rp. 1.5 billion in scholarship money. Many have become successful people in a wide range of profession and activities. For this, allow us tu use this opportunity to express our sincerest thanks to all our donors.
